That genetic melange, coupled with the rich diversity of her hometown of Houston, Texas is very apparent in her art practice as she creates work that does not cross pollinate. Through fragmented realities, Kaima uses collage and paintings to discover the social implications of individual and collective identity. Her use of distortion through dense assemblage and crushed glass invite the viewer to investigate their perception. She has showcased nationally in group exhibitions, including the Glendale Library and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Her work continues to garner attention, winning top prizes and awards. She is currently working on her MFA in painting at the University of Houston.

Sheila Pree Bright

“As a Photographic Artist, I am interested in the life of those individuals and communities that are often unseen in the world. My objective is to capture images that allow us to experience those who are unheard as they contemplate or voice their reaction to ideas and issues that are shaping their world. In this process, what I shoot creates contemporary stories about social, political and historical context not often seen in the visual communication of traditional media and fine art platforms. My work captures and presents aspects of our culture, and sometimes counterculture, that challenges the typical narratives of Western thought and power structures.” - Sheila Pree Bright

Lanise Howard

From Lanise’s Website:

I am interested in the analogous world, hidden histories, and the digital space. My work ranges from portraiture, to large allegorical figurative paintings. The work often lies in- between differing states of being. I aim to create new spaces through paint, where the viewer can become transported. I often think about the analogous world; one which is related to our own, but can be a space of new possibility. In my experience as an African American woman, I find myself thinking of an alternative to that experience, one rooted in the necessity to rewrite history. The idea of change then becomes an element of the work, enacted through the dreamed space. My work often presents hypotheses and tries to offer possible answers, through engagement and inquiry. I am primarily interested in the figure and landscape. Elements of realism and abstraction juxtapose against each other, in order to offer a peak into the in between, beyond what we can usually see. I am ebbing towards this space of the in-between and the analogous, finding ways to help construct it materially.

Ija Monet

From Ija’s Site:

As an artist, I work hard to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that exists in our corrupt society. Part of my process before I begin painting is to read and research as much as I can about the specific topic I want to recreate on canvas from my own perspective. I do not merely want to capture the image with my brush; rather, with carful, colorful strokes, I want to give a new lease on life.

Ultimately, I want people to view my work, and me as an artist, and realize that location doesn’t necessarily determine potential."

Qrcky

As an artist, I hold a steadfast belief that art is not merely a luxury but an essential element of our existence. This is because it possesses the remarkable ability to chronicle history, enlighten minds, and preserve knowledge for future generations. As such, art is a crucial component of our cultural heritage, a heritage that should be accessible to all.

I engage in artistic creation with a profound purpose—to safeguard the historical narratives of those generations who may not find themselves represented in traditional forms of art. Through my creative expression, I forge an identity and tell my story. By doing so, I aspire to inspire others to share their unique experiences and collaboratively shape a brighter future for humanity.

Jack Radcliffe

Radcliffe’s candid portraits of friends, family, acquaintances, carefully composed and richly printed, seem to meet the definition of documentary photography. ...his images are, in fact, powerful challenges to that definition, as he pushes his use of the photograph as a document. Unlike the cold, objective, observational nature often characteristic of this kind of photography, Radcliffe approaches his subjects with an unavoidable compassion and insight. With his sensitivity towards his subjects, the layer of textures he finds with his camera lens, and the richness of tone he achieves with his skillful printing, his portraits mesmerize us with their depth and world-worn vulnerability and innocence.

Kennedy Ringgold

From Kennedy’s Site:

My paintings explore my emotional connection to the experiences I share within the African American diaspora.  The clear focus in my work on childhood and adulthood in the inner city is a reflection on my understanding of race, living and functioning in a place that was not made for us to progress. Being Black in America leaves you susceptible to stereotyping, social isolation, stigmatization, and an internalized feeling of helplessness . Despite this, we find a way to make light of the situation and persevere through our traumas. My work shows the realness of these circumstances,  but also the potential to be greater. Through my oil paintings I hope to create a new narrative that will help people understand the experiences we face everyday being black in America and how we thrive in an environment built on racism.

David Shevlino

David Shevlino was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1962. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania, he also studied at the Art Students' League in New York. Growing up near NYC, Shevlino was exposed to art as a teenager. He began making trips to art museums at age 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative painting. His early work was very traditional and classically inspired. However, after many years of experimenting, Shevlino began exploring a looser paint application which straddles the line between representational painting and abstraction. This "in between" area is where the painter feels most comfortable and best able to express his artistic voice. His paintings are characterized by broad brushstrokes, a sensuous application of paint and an obvious feel for tonal harmonies. At the same time, the artist demonstrates a firm sense of control, tightening up the composition through his deft modeling of the human form.
Shevlino has exhibited work nationally in both solo and group exhibits over the past two decades and currently lives in Wake Forest, NC.
